slashdotcom recently visited the Northampton Hope Centre, delivering over £500 worth of essential donations to support people experiencing homelessness and hardship across the local community. The Hope Centre provides vital services to individuals facing poverty, exclusion, and crisis, and our goal was to offer practical help rooted in dignity, warmth, and genuine care.

The Perfect Partnership?
Building a Long Term Partnership With Northampton Hope Centre
Beyond the donation itself, our visit opened the door to a powerful conversation about how slashdotcom can support the Hope Centre on an ongoing basis. Together, we explored several impactful opportunities that align with our commitment to community support and digital empowerment.
1. Running a Regular Breakfast Club
We discussed the potential for slashdotcom to help run a regular breakfast club, ensuring that individuals accessing the Centre can start their day with a hot drink, food, and a sense of community connection.
2. Expanding Digital Inclusion for People in Hardship
Digital exclusion is one of the biggest barriers faced by people experiencing homelessness. Accessing services, applying for jobs, managing benefits, or even staying in touch with support networks becomes incredibly difficult without digital skills or reliable technology.
slashdotcom explored how we can help by offering:
A community computer hub
Basic digital skills sessions
Support with setting up email addresses
Word processing and document skills
Help navigating essential services such as GOV.UK
CV writing workshops to support employment opportunities

Understanding Safeguarding, Device Suitability, and Charging Challenges
Our conversation also highlighted several real world barriers that shape how digital inclusion must be delivered responsibly:
Safeguarding Risks: Vulnerable individuals face heightened online risks, including, coercion, and exploitation. Any digital inclusion programme must prioritise safety, awareness, and protective guidance, Protecting those facing hardship, and the community.
Choosing the Right Mobile Devices: Not all phones are suitable for people in crisis. We discussed which devices offer durability, simplicity, and security — and how the wrong device can unintentionally increase risk.
The Challenge of Charging Phones: Without stable accommodation, many people simply cannot charge their devices. Even when someone has a phone, staying connected becomes nearly impossible without safe access to power. Understanding this helps shape realistic, compassionate digital support.
These insights will directly inform how slashdotcom designs digital inclusion programmes that are safe, practical, and genuinely empowering.
